Elle est souvent éclipsée par l’éthique de la responsabilité pour autrui qui fleurit après la guerre et par des chefs-d’œuvre comme <em>Totalité et infini</em> et <em>Autrement qu’être ou au-delà de l’essence</em>. Cette méconnaissance affecte particulièrement les écrits sur le judaïsme que Levinas a publiés avant sa rencontre, en 1947, avec le fameux et mystérieux « Monsieur Chouchani » qui</span><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">l’introduira dans l’univers du Talmud. Quelles sont les sources sur lesquelles s’appuie le jeune Levinas après qu’il ait accompli son « retour » aux sources juives ? Quels sont les enjeux de ce « retour » qui s’opère dans un contexte où l’hitlérisme, selon ses propres termes, « rive le Juif à son judaïsme » ? En quoi peut-on y voir, dans la lignée de sa « philosophie de l’évasion », une possibilité de se libérer de cet « enchaînement » à l’être juif qui semble « irrémissible » : telles sont les questions que notre exposé se propose de clarifier.</span></p>

Bien qu’une telle conception soit paradoxale et semble impossible, Levinas aura cherché tout au long de son œuvre à lui donner sa plausibilité, pour en faire un horizon pour nos vies. Dans cette intervention, je voudrais suivre le traitement par Levinas du motif anontologique au fil de cinq étapes: 1) l’invention de la perspective en cause dans <em>De l’évasion</em> ; 2) la reconceptualisation de <em>De l’existence à l’existant</em> ; 3) la radicalisation et le déplacement de <em>Totalité et infini</em> ; 4) le passage à l’immémorial et la diversification d’<em>Autrement qu’être</em> ; 5) l’adjonction du motif de l’éveil dans <em>De Dieu qui vient à l’idée</em>.</span></p>
